  • Description

The center of Martkopi is decorated with an unsurpassed architectural structure - the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built between 1810 and 1825. The uniqueness of this place is enhanced by the history of its origin: 200 gold pieces were sent for the construction of the temple by Abram Shindzhikashvili himself, the ruler of Egypt, originally from Georgia. The skill of the Vakhtangov architect Kalatozi Glakha Zaziashvili came to life in every stone of this church.

Despite the destruction of 1939, when the temple was dismantled by the Bolsheviks, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary preserved its walls, which soon became the basis for the restoration of the temple in 1978 with the blessing of Patriarch Ilia II.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Martkopi is not just a religious building, it is a historical point that touches on the roots of Georgian culture and religion. This place embodies the power and resilience of the spirit of the nation, the ability to revive and preserve its traditions regardless of centuries-old trials.

A visit to this place will be interesting both for lovers of art and architecture, and for those who study the history of Georgia, as well as for those who want to touch the shrines and feel the tranquility and harmony of this place.
