The monument to Vladimir Mayakovsky stands in central Kutaisi, on Tsisperkantselebi Street, in front of the building of the former classical gymnasium. This is where the future poet studied as a boy: Mayakovsky was born in 1893 in Baghdati, in the Kutaisi province, attended the Kutaisi gymnasium from 1902, and in 1906, after his father's death, the family moved to Moscow.
The monument was opened in 1957 and is made in the spirit of its era. The poet is shown very young, as a schoolboy, so tourists used to the image of the adult Mayakovsky do not recognise him at once. The inscription on the pedestal is only in Georgian. The sculpture is small and easy to find on a walk through the centre; for the city it is a reminder that one of the greatest poets of the 20th century spent his childhood here.
