The basilica of St. George in Kachreti is a church of the northern part of a village on the Kakheti highway. An old St. George dedication, village yards around and the vineyards of Kakheti beyond them: the transit village turns out deeper than it looks from the road, where only petrol stations and roadside cafes are visible.
Kachreti is familiar to many from the Sagarejo - Gurjaani highway, and the basilica gives it a character of its own. The villageโs other church, the church of the Virgin Mary, stands in the southern part: a pair for one short call, both two minutes off the asphalt, so the call will not upset a travel schedule.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service. On Giorgoba the whole village gathers by the basilica.
