The Ermile Wine Museum is a family collection attached to a working cellar: the qvevri, the press, the barrels, the tools and the vessels several generations of the household have used. The whole cycle is shown here, from picking to bottling, with an explanation of how the household method differs from the factory one. The format is informal, closer to a visit than to a museum tour.
The cellar stands in Kachreti, a village in the Gurjaani municipality, among the vineyards of southern Kakheti. A resort area with springs and several neighbouring estates are close by. Gurjaani is less than half an hour away.
The place is private, so it is worth arranging the visit in advance through locals or a guide. Allow about an hour for the tour and a talk with the owners. A tasting depends on the season and on whether the owners are there.
Tips
- Arrange the visit in advance, the cellar is a family one
- Come in September or October, harvest time is the most interesting
- Combine the visit with the kvevri museum in the same village
How to get there
- From Gurjaani along the local road, about twenty minutes by car
- Roughly two hours from Tbilisi via Sagarejo and Badiauri
