The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and stands in the very centre of Ikalto. Barely seventy metres away is another church of the village, dedicated to Saint George: the two read as a single cluster, yet their dedications differ and one does not replace the other.
Ikalto lies in the foothills west of Telavi, among vineyards, and is also known for pottery. The Ikalto academy at the monastery, which draws visitors for the history of Georgia, stands here too, but that is a separate place on the edge of the village. A third village church, dedicated to the prophet Elijah, stands at the western edge.
There is no fixed schedule of services here, but the village is busy and getting inside is usually possible. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet. Both central churches can be seen in ten minutes, and the stop is easy to add to a trip to the academy.
