The church is dedicated to Saint George and stands barely seventy metres from the Virgin Mary church of Ikalto. The dedications of the two differ, so these are two neighbouring parishes rather than one sanctuary under two names.
Ikalto lies in the foothills west of Telavi, among vineyards, and is known for pottery. The famous Ikalto academy at the monastery stands on the edge of the village and has nothing to do with these churches. A third village church, dedicated to the prophet Elijah, is at the western edge.
There is no fixed schedule of services, but the village is busy and getting inside is usually possible. The two central churches can be seen in ten minutes, and the stop is easy to add to a trip to the academy: distances within Ikalto are short and the roads are level.
