Do you need travel insurance for Georgia, and where can you get it?

Which policy border officers ask for since 2026, how much cover you need and where to buy it.

Short answer

Yes, since January 1, 2026, every foreign tourist must have health and accident insurance for the whole trip, with at least 30,000 GEL of cover. You can buy the policy online in advance from a Georgian or a foreign insurer, as long as it is issued in Georgian or English.

Why

  1. The requirement is set by Government of Georgia Resolution No 602 of 26 December 2025, adopted under the Law on Tourism, and has applied since January 1, 2026.
  2. The policy must cover your entire stay, including the days you arrive and leave.
  3. Policies from both Georgian and foreign insurers are accepted if the cover is at least 30,000 GEL.
  4. You can show the policy on paper or electronically, in Georgian or English; the patrol police have the right to check it at the border.
  5. Without a policy you may be refused entry: Georgia's law on aliens explicitly names lack of insurance as a ground for refusal.

Details

Under Resolution No 602, the policy must state the parties, the covered territory, what is insured, the start and end dates, the insured risks, the sum insured, the premium and where and when it is paid. If you buy from a foreign insurer, check that Georgia is within the covered territory and the sum is at least 30,000 GEL. The rule does not apply to some categories of foreigners: holders of diplomatic or special visas and of diplomatic, official, service or special passports, accredited staff of embassies and international organisations and their families, people whose entry is covered by Georgia's international agreements, and drivers in international freight and passenger transport.

Tip

Save the policy on your phone and print one copy: you may be asked for it at the border, and mobile data may not work at that moment.

What may differ

The rule is for tourists. If you live in Georgia on a residence permit or work here, different rules apply, and people usually take out local health insurance.

Common misconception

Any travel insurance policy will do.

What actually happens

You need a policy that is valid in Georgia for your whole trip and covers at least 30,000 GEL. Cheap policies with a low limit will not be accepted.
