Where is Griboyedov buried in Tbilisi, and what links Russian writers to Georgia?
Mtatsminda, Nino Chavchavadze and places linked to Pushkin, Lermontov and Tolstoy.
Short answer
Alexander Griboyedov is buried in Tbilisi in a grotto by St David's Church on Mount Mtatsminda, next to the Pantheon of Georgian writers and public figures. The monument on his grave was erected by his widow Nino Chavchavadze, who is buried beside him. Pushkin, Lermontov and Leo Tolstoy are also linked to Georgia; Tolstoy wrote his first novella, Childhood, in Tiflis.
Why
- Griboyedov was killed in Tehran in 1829, and his body was brought to Tiflis at his wife's request.
- The monument bears Nino's inscription: 'Your mind and deeds are immortal in Russian memory, but why did my love outlive you?'
- Lermontov described Mtskheta in his poem Mtsyri, and Pushkin visited Tiflis in 1829.
Details
You can walk up to the Mtatsminda Pantheon from Rustaveli Avenue or take the funicular, which has an intermediate stop by the church. Entry to the Pantheon is free.
