Why is Batumi's 6 May Park called that, and what is there to see?
The name's history, Nurigeli Lake, the dolphinarium and the zoo.
Short answer
6 May Park is named after the events of 6 May 2004, when the Adjara crisis ended and the autonomy's leader Aslan Abashidze left the republic. The park itself was laid out in 1881, was once called Alexander Park and in Soviet times Pioneer Park. Today it has Nurigeli Lake with boats, a dolphinarium, a mini-zoo, an aquarium and children's rides.
Why
- The park got its first name, Alexander Park, after Emperor Alexander III visited Batumi in 1888.
- It received its current name in the mid-2000s.
- Nurigeli Lake is natural, and legend links its name to a boy called Nuri.
Details
Entry is free and the park is open around the clock, while the dolphinarium and rides are paid. In the evening an illuminated fountain is switched on in the middle of the lake.
