What is there to see and do in Sarpi?
The border village with the clearest water on the coast.
Short answer
Sarpi is a village right on the Turkish border, about 15-18 kilometres south of Batumi, known for its clear sea, pebble beach and rocks people jump from into the water. Kvariati beach and the ancient Gonio fortress are nearby. City bus 16 and minibuses run from Batumi to Sarpi, and a taxi takes about 20-25 minutes.
Why
- Sarpi is home to the main land crossing between Georgia and Turkey.
- The mountains come right down to the sea here, so the water is clearer than on the northern coast.
- The Laz, a people related to the Georgians, live in and around Sarpi.
Details
Sarpi's beach is small and gets crowded in season, so come in the morning. Only jump from the rocks at known spots, and check the depth first.
