What does a Georgian residence permit give you?

The holder's rights, and what it does not give.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

A Georgian residence permit lets you live in the country beyond the 365-day limit, leave and re-enter without a visa, get a Georgian personal number and open a bank account more easily. It does not automatically give the right to work: since 2026 most work requires a separate authorisation. It also does not exempt you from visas for other countries.

Why

  1. The rights of foreigners with residence permits are set by the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons.
  2. Time on a residence permit counts towards permanent residence and citizenship.
  3. Residents of some countries can enter Georgia visa-free, but a Georgian permit does not work the other way round.

Details

A permit must be renewed before it expires, and you must keep the grounds on which it was issued. If you lose them, for example a job or property, the permit can be terminated.
