Short answer

As a general rule, Georgian citizenship can be obtained after 10 years of continuous lawful residence, passing exams in Georgian language, history and basic law, and showing employment or property in Georgia. Spouses of Georgian citizens need 5 years of residence. Georgia allows dual citizenship only in exceptional cases, by presidential decision.

Why

  1. The conditions are set by the Organic Law of Georgia on Georgian Citizenship.
  2. Citizenship is granted by the President of Georgia on the recommendation of the authorised body.
  3. Citizenship by exception may be granted for special merit or in the state's interest, without residence or language requirements.

Details

Former Georgian citizens can restore citizenship through a simplified procedure. Unless dual citizenship is granted, you must give up your previous citizenship when becoming Georgian.
