What grows in Georgia and what to buy in which month.
Short answer
Georgia grows grapes, peaches, apricots, cherries, plums, pomegranates, figs, persimmons, quince, walnuts and hazelnuts, and in the humid west also tangerines, feijoa, kiwi and tea. Summer markets have peaches and cherries, September brings grapes and figs, and from October there are persimmons, feijoa and tangerines. Mushrooms such as chanterelles and porcini are gathered in the forests.
Why
- The subtropical west suits citrus and tea, and the drier east suits vineyards and orchards.
- Tangerines are mainly grown in Adjara and Guria.
- Georgia is a major hazelnut producer.
Details
Only pick mushrooms with someone who knows them well, as poisonous species grow in Georgia too. Seasonal fruit is cheaper and tastier at markets than in supermarkets.
