How do you get from Turkey to Georgia?
Flights, buses and the Sarpi border.
Short answer
The fastest way from Turkey to Georgia is to fly: Istanbul and other cities have flights to Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi. Overland, the main route is the Sarpi crossing near Batumi: buses and minibuses run there from Trabzon, Rize and Hopa, and direct coaches go from Istanbul to Batumi and Tbilisi. You can cross at Sarpi on foot; Batumi is 15-18 kilometres away.
Why
- On the Georgian side, a city bus and minibuses run from Sarpi to Batumi.
- There are other land crossings, such as Vale near Akhaltsikhe, but they are used less often.
- Since 2026, tourists need health insurance to enter Georgia.
Details
There can be queues at Sarpi in season and on holidays, especially for cars. Have your insurance ready and check your passport's validity before travelling.
