How do you get from Tbilisi to Azerbaijan?
The Tbilisi-Baku train, flights and the closed land border.
Short answer
From Tbilisi you can fly to Azerbaijan or take the Tbilisi-Baku train, relaunched on 26 May 2026: it leaves daily at 21:00 and reaches Baku the next morning, after about nine and a half hours. You still cannot enter Azerbaijan by car, bus or on foot across the land border, as Azerbaijan has kept its land borders closed to passengers since 2020, with an exception only for the train. Check Azerbaijan's entry rules for your nationality before travelling.
Why
- In Georgia the train stops at Tbilisi and Gardabani; in Azerbaijan at Ganja and Baku.
- Border checks take place on board, about an hour on each side.
- Direct flights from Tbilisi to Baku take about an hour.
Details
Train tickets are sold by Georgian and Azerbaijani Railways; buy early in summer. Azerbaijan reviews its land border rules, so check the latest news before you go.
