How can you learn Georgian on your own, and how long does it take?

Where to start, how long it takes and where to study.

Short answer

Start Georgian with the alphabet: the 33 Mkhedruli letters usually take 2-4 weeks, after which you can read signs and menus. Basic everyday conversation takes six months to a year of regular study, and fluency several years, because the grammar, especially verbs, is complex. You can study at courses in Tbilisi and Batumi, with an online tutor, from textbooks and with apps.

Why

  1. Georgian is considered one of the harder languages for Russian and English speakers.
  2. Pronunciation is unfamiliar because of ejective sounds and consonant clusters.
  3. Real practice in Georgia speeds up learning more than any app.

Details

Many universities and language schools run Georgian courses for foreigners. A residence permit doesn't require Georgian, but citizenship requires a Georgian language exam.
