How old is Tbilisi?
The city's founding, the move of the capital and ancient settlements.
Short answer
Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century AD and is more than 1,500 years old. According to legend, King Vakhtang Gorgasali founded it by the warm sulfur springs, and his son Dachi moved the capital here from Mtskheta in the early 6th century. Archaeologists have found traces of settlements on the site far older than the city.
Why
- The city's name comes from tbili, warm, after the sulfur springs.
- Every autumn Tbilisi celebrates its city day, Tbilisoba.
- Over its history the city was destroyed and rebuilt many times.
