Which is correct: Georgia or the Republic of Georgia?
The country's official name and form of government.
Short answer
Under the Constitution, the country's official name is simply Georgia, Sakartvelo in Georgian; 'Republic of Georgia' was used in the early 1990s and is no longer official. Georgia is, however, a democratic republic in form of government, with a parliament and president. So the correct name is 'Georgia', and 'Republic of Georgia' is outdated.
Why
- Sakartvelo means 'land of the Kartvelians', the Georgians.
- In English the country shares its name with the US state, so 'the country' is sometimes added.
- Georgia's current Constitution was adopted in 1995.
Details
Both forms appear in documents and on maps, but there's only one official name: Georgia. Nobody will mind 'Republic of Georgia' in conversation, but it sounds dated.
Tip
In documents, forms and tickets, write the country as Georgia.
