How high above sea level is Tbilisi?

Elevation range and why the city is so hilly.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Tbilisi lies at roughly 380 to 770 metres above sea level: the lowest districts are along the Kura, and the highest point is Mount Mtatsminda. The centre, Old Town and Rustaveli Avenue are at about 450-500 metres. The height differences give the city many steep streets, stairways and cable cars.

Why

  1. Mtatsminda is reached by funicular and overlooks the whole city.
  2. The altitude doesn't affect how you feel; it isn't high mountain terrain.
  3. Tbilisi stretches almost 40 kilometres along the Kura.

Details

Wear comfortable shoes for the Old Town and Sololaki, as the climbs are steep. To avoid walking uphill, use the Narikala cable car and the funicular.

Tip

To avoid walking uphill, use the Narikala cable car and the Mtatsminda funicular.
