How do you use the Tbilisi metro, and how much is the fare?
Lines, opening hours, payment and transfers.
Short answer
A metro ride in Tbilisi costs 1 GEL and includes 90 minutes of transfers to buses, municipal minibuses and the Bagebi-University ropeway. You pay with a Metromoney card or a contactless bank card at the turnstile; cash is not accepted. The metro has two lines and 23 stations and runs from about 6 am to midnight.
Why
- The fare and the 90-minute rule are set by Tbilisi Transport Company.
- A Metromoney card costs 2 GEL and is sold and topped up at metro ticket offices.
- Frequent riders can buy day, week and month passes.
Details
The lines are the Akhmeteli-Varketili and Saburtalo lines, with a transfer at Station Square. There is no airport station: bus 337 takes you to the metro. Paying with a foreign bank card can sometimes be charged differently from the Metromoney fare.
Tip
If you are staying a few days, get a Metromoney card: with it, transfers within 90 minutes are definitely free.
