Where is Georgia: in Europe or in Asia?
Location, neighbours and why the question is debated.
Short answer
Georgia lies in the South Caucasus, between the Black and Caspian Seas, where Europe meets Asia. Geographically, most of the country is south of the Main Caucasus Ridge, so it is often placed in Asia, but politically and culturally Georgia looks to Europe and is a member of the Council of Europe. Its neighbours are Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Why
- The Europe-Asia boundary in the Caucasus is drawn in different ways, hence the debate.
- Georgia joined the Council of Europe in 1999 and received EU candidate status in December 2023.
- The country covers about 69,700 square kilometres and had 3.93 million people in the 2024 census.
Details
To the west Georgia meets the Black Sea, with Batumi its main resort. The capital, Tbilisi, is in the east of the country.
