What is there to see and do in Kutaisi?
UNESCO churches, the city centre and nearby caves and canyons.
Short answer
In Kutaisi, see Bagrati Cathedral on the hill above the city, the Gelati and Motsameta monasteries, the Colchis Fountain on the main square, the White Bridge and the Green Bazaar. Nearby are Prometheus Cave, Sataplia with its dinosaur footprints, and the Martvili and Okatse canyons. One day is enough for the city, or two to three with the surroundings.
Why
- Gelati Monastery was founded by King David the Builder in the 12th century and is UNESCO-listed.
- Prometheus Cave, Sataplia and the canyons are easy to combine in one trip by car or on a tour.
- A cable car runs from the centre to a park on the hill.
Details
Entry to the caves and canyons is paid, and some sites may close on Mondays. In summer, head to the canyons in the morning before the queues.
