Where can you go on a day trip from Tbilisi?

Mtskheta, Kazbegi, Kakheti, Uplistsikhe, Borjomi and David Gareja.

Short answer

The most popular day trips from Tbilisi are Mtskheta, half an hour away; Kazbegi with Gergeti Church and stops at Ananuri and Gudauri; Sighnaghi and wine country Kakheti; the cave town of Uplistsikhe with Gori; and Borjomi. The David Gareja monastery in the semi-desert to the southeast is also doable in a day. Most places are reachable by minibus, but a car or tour lets you see more.

Why

  1. Kazbegi is about 3 hours each way, so leave early.
  2. In winter, the road to Kazbegi over the Jvari Pass is sometimes closed.
  3. Vardzia is too far for a day trip; allow two days.

Details

Minibuses leave from Didube and Ortachala stations, and tours are sold by Old Town agencies. For David Gareja, a tour or taxi is easier, as public transport barely goes there.
