The National Statistics Office of Georgia, Geostat, published its survey of research and development in higher education institutions and scientific institutions on 2 November 2026. The figures refer to 2025, not to the current year.
Sixty-nine institutions carried out research and development in the survey. Their total R&D expenditure in 2025 was 282.2 million GEL, 16.2 percent above 2024. For wider context on what the Georgian economy rests on, note that these numbers cover only the universities and scientific institutions included in the survey.
R&D employment was 16,552 people, up 2.2 percent from 2024. Of those, 14,390 were researchers. This subset should not be confused with all R&D staff.
Women made up 55.1 percent of researchers and men 44.9 percent. Some 67.5 percent of researchers held doctoral or equivalent degrees, 29.8 percent masters or equivalent and 2.7 percent bachelors or equivalent. General salary levels in Georgia are not part of this publication and are not covered by these figures.
