๐Ÿงญ Who This Article Is For

Kikvidze Park is one of the few Tbilisi parks where there is truly something for the whole family to do at the same time. While the kids are on the playground, teenagers are at the skatepark, and adults are on the running track or tennis court. This article is for tourists looking for a lively city park far from tourist routes, and for those staying in Nadzaladevi or near Didube.

Kikvidze Park

๐Ÿ™๏ธ A Park in a Densely Populated Area

Nadzaladevi is one of Tbilisi's oldest and most densely populated districts. There are no viewpoints or trendy cafes here, but there is a real residential rhythm to the city. Kikvidze Park stands right in the heart of this rhythm โ€” at the intersection of Zurab Kikvidze and Dadiani streets, surrounded by residential buildings, schools, and public transport stops.

For this very reason, as Mayor Kakha Kaladze himself said at the opening of the renovated park in 2020, reconstruction here was particularly important: Kikvidze garden is located in a densely populated area, and many local residents spend their free time here. Not tourists โ€” citizens.

Kikvidze Park

๐Ÿ—๏ธ How the Park Was Upgraded: Two Stages

The park had existed for a long time and was called the "Veterans' Park of Culture and Leisure." The reconstruction took place in two stages.

  • The first stage โ€” 2019โ€“2020. The Tbilisi City Hall allocated 4.5 million GEL for full rehabilitation. The territory was expanded through the adjacent area, bicycle and running tracks were laid, sports fields and pavilions were equipped, lighting and video surveillance were installed, a closed zone for walking dogs appeared, and the fountain and buildings inside the park were restored. The opening took place in July 2020 โ€” with the participation of Mayor Kakha Kaladze and Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia, followed by a festive concert in the park.
  • The second stage โ€” 2021. In March, construction began on the skatepark. It was opened in September 2021 by Kaladze himself. The budget was over 450 thousand GEL, and the skate area exceeded 500 square meters. The skatepark became the third in Tbilisi after Mziuri and Deda Ena Garden.

๐Ÿ›น What is in the Park

The park is small by Tbilisi standards, but tightly packed.

  • Skatepark โ€” the most noticeable addition here in 2021. It features quarters, ledges, a manual pad, a rail, a curb, a euro-gap, and transfers. According to skaters' reviews, it is good for beginners and amateurs; the surface can be slippery after rain, and in the afternoon there are many children and passers-by here.
  • Coniferous alley โ€” another detail that almost everyone notices. The smell of pine needles, the shade, a different sound โ€” it feels unexpected in the middle of the city.
  • Green bush labyrinth โ€” small, but kids love it.
  • Sports fields โ€” tennis court, basketball, volleyball, workout area, football pitch.
  • Playgrounds โ€” swings, slides, sandbox, designed for different ages.
  • Fountains โ€” two, plus drinking fountains on the territory.
  • Coworking center โ€” right in the park. A rarity for Tbilisi's green zones.
  • Library โ€” according to several reviews, a small one is available.
  • Kiosk โ€” hot dogs, waffles, ice cream.
Kikvidze Park

โœ๏ธ Editorial Tip

It is better to visit the skatepark in the morning or on a weekday โ€” after lunch, there are many children and passers-by, making it crowded for skaters. The coniferous alley is worth walking separately: it is literally a different sensation โ€” the smell, shade, and silence that you don't expect in a regular city park. If you are traveling with children of different ages, there really is an activity for everyone. There is no toilet in the park; the nearest ones are in cafes on Dadiani St.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ How to Get There

1๏ธโƒฃ By metro to Didube โ€” exit and walk for about 10 minutes along Dadiani St towards Nadzaladevi.

2๏ธโƒฃ By metro to Gotsiridze โ€” roughly the same distance, through residential quarters.

3๏ธโƒฃ By taxi โ€” say "Kikvidze Park in Nadzaladevi" or use the coordinates 41.748307, 44.790073.

๐ŸŽ–๏ธ Who was Vasily Kikvidze

The park is named after Vasily (Vaso) Isidorovich Kikvidze (1895โ€“1919) โ€” a Georgian revolutionary and military commander, a hero of the Civil War.

Born in Kutaisi, he spent his childhood in Tiflis. He studied at the Kutaisi Gymnasium โ€” at the same time, though a grade higher, Vladimir Mayakovsky studied there. He was expelled for participating in revolutionary circles. During World War I, he was a volunteer in the cavalry. After the 1917 revolution, he became one of the Red Army commanders on the Southwestern Front.

In May 1918, in Tambov, he formed a division โ€” it later became the 16th Rifle Division and fought against the troops of General Krasnov. Kikvidze was only 23 years old.

On the night of January 11-12, 1919, he was mortally wounded during reconnaissance near the Zubrilov farmstead and passed away. He is buried in Moscow at the Vagankovo Cemetery. In 1959, monuments to him were erected in Tbilisi and Kutaisi.

The garden named after him is a Soviet legacy. The very name "Veterans' Park of Culture and Leisure" is also from that era. After the 2020 reconstruction, the park received a new life, but the old name remained.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What People Who Visit Say

"Wonderful place! Very clean and beautiful, there is a ramp for skateboarders, a playground, and workout equipment. In the park you can find a football field, a small green labyrinth, and two fountains. There are drinking fountains. There is a coworking center on the territory. Full of greenery: lawns, trees. Walking here with children is a pure pleasure."
"Beautiful newly renovated park. Wide walkways and ample space for children to play and just to relax. Skatepark as well as separate fenced play area for dogs. Tennis and basketball courts and lots of lovely trees for shade in summer. Really a beautiful relaxing park in the heart of the city."
"Perhaps one of the best places in the city. Especially beautiful after the restoration."
"Large park just 10 min walk from Didube Metro. Great place for walking, jogging and exercises. There is a bike lane and running track. Many benches, basketball & tennis court and library as well."
"Small but very cozy park. A skatepark, tennis courts, a playground for kids โ€” all in one place."

๐Ÿ Is It Worth a Special Trip

If you live in Nadzaladevi, Didube, or nearby โ€” this is definitely your park. If you are coming from the other end of the city: the skatepark is the best among available city parks in Tbilisi; the coniferous alley is unexpected; the outdoor coworking space is intriguing. For a family with children of different ages, the infrastructure is very successful. It has not become a tourist spot, and that is a plus โ€” quiet, no crowds, a real neighborhood rhythm.

Save the article or share it with those traveling to Tbilisi.

โ„น๏ธ The park is open 24/7, admission is free. There is no toilet on the territory. The operating hours of the coworking space and kiosk may change โ€” please check on-site. The information is current at the time of publication.
