Every resident of Georgia knows this place. The cultural heritage is Motsameta. Description of this complex and all its features.
Motsameta Monastery - every resident of Georgia knows this place, because it is distinguished by its beautiful architecture and culture and has a huge historical significance. Not only believers come here, but also tourists who want to learn better the Georgian traditions and culture, enjoy the beautiful scenery
The monastery of Motsameta is located in the village of the same name in the valley of the river Tskaltsitela. You can reach this church of great martyrs only 6 kilometers east of the Georgian city of Kutaisi.
The relics of St. David and St. Constantine, devoted to their homeland and the Christian faith, rest on the left side of the altar in the monastery Motsameta. The folk festival "Motsametoba" or Orzipoba is held every year at this monastery. The Day of the Holy Martyrs is celebrated on October 15. This custom has been known since the 18th century.
As mentioned earlier the monastery of Motsameta is located in the valley of the river Tskaltsitela. This area has historically been one of the most important regions of Georgia. It played a significant role in the political, economic and cultural life of this country. Tskaltsitela valley itself is a peninsula, which is washed by the river of the same name, the banks of which are protected on each side by steep cliffs.
The church of Motsameta itself is a cross-domed temple, with all four arms of the cross equal. Its dome is supported by four pillars. Of these, two are part of the altar, which is located in the northern part of the temple. This is a very interesting fact.
Art historians believe that this can be explained by the fact that in the eastern part of the church were buried saints David and Constantine, and this was the most honorable place. For that reason the altar is not in the eastern part, but in the northern part, where the architect moved it. In all, the church has two entrances, located on the western and southern parts of the structure.
The monastery of Motsameta always amazes visitors with its historical role and appearance. Tourists cannot pass by this temple immersed in greenery. It is one of the outstanding places to see in Imereti.
