Tourist Georgia: Church of Our Lady of Mamula: the culture of past centuries.

The village of Mamula, which is located in the Kvemo Kartli region, municipality of Dmanisi, can undoubtedly be considered one of the most beautiful places in Georgia. It is there where the temple of Our Lady of Mamula is located.

Architecture

The building was built of different stones, and its walls still have relief insets with images of crosses. One of them is located in the upper part of the entrance, having an irregular shape, it adds a decorative zest to the artistic solution of the temple. There is one more relief cross on the east border of the southern facade and by the east window. The facades have a cornice. The entrance to the church is from the south.

The building has a vaulted hall ending in a semicircular apse to the east. Pilasters hold the Triumphal Arch, the other arches are supported by brackets.

There is one narrow window each in the apse, in the north and west walls. The east window is decorated with a horizontal extension. The church courtyard holds the remains of cemetery stones, one of which depicts a ram. The temple dates back to the VIII-IX centuries, when similar embossed stones were widespread. This monument of architecture to this day retains the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
