Khertvisi is a medieval fortress in southern Georgia, built on a rocky hill, near the very place where the Mtkvari and Paravani rivers merge. Samtskhe-Javakheti region, 30 km from the city of Akhaltsikhe. It is worth paying attention to Khertvisi if you have not yet decided what to see in Georgia.
This landmark is included in the list of cultural heritage sites of the country. It is also included in the list of objects proposed by the Government of Georgia as applicants for the acquisition of the status of a World Heritage Site. It's no secret that only the most beautiful places in Georgia could be on these lists.
There is practically no data on the life of the city during the early Middle Ages, except that it was forgotten, and in the 12th century it was officially granted the status of a city.
Thanks to the works of Georgian researchers and scientists, it became known about the existence of this city in the 4th century BC. Legends tell about the campaign of Alexander the Great to the east and about the battle for this fortress, attempts to conquer which were unsuccessful. Modern historians agree that the city was founded in the ancient era, but strongly oppose the fact that Alexander the Great and his troops have ever been here at all, for them it is just a beautiful legend about the legendary commander.
The successful location of the Khertvisi fortress contributed a lot to its development: next to it was a trade route that ran along the Mtkvari River to the seashore and two neighboring states – Turkey and Armenia.
At the end of the 12th century, a powerful earthquake occurred, which led to the destruction of the fortress walls. Also, the fortress suffered greatly from the Mongol invasion – they turned it into ruins. After liberation from enemy oppression, which happened around 1354-56, the fortress was restored and slightly expanded. Unfortunately, it was not possible to completely revive the fortress.
In the period from 2017 to 2018, this architectural monument was reconstructed and landscaped. The Municipal Development Fund has made great efforts, and the World Bank has invested a lot of money in order to make this project a reality. The restoration made it possible to carry out repair work in the administrative building, put the city gates in order, pave roads, organize comfortable parking and establish communications.
The sights of Georgia give everyone the opportunity to touch history: the infrastructure of this facility meets the needs of people with disabilities.

Хотелось бы мне увидеть своими глазами крепость Хартвиси, место, отстоявшее землетрясение, нашествия, даже самую разрушительную стихию - время!
