Church of St. George in Chula built in the 14th century, is one of the attractions of Georgia and is part of the temple complex Zafara and Zarzma.
The frescoes and paintings of the monastery in Chula are especially interesting for tourists and travelers in Georgia. The building of the Church of St. George was built in 1381 and was used as a monastery for men.
Chule Monastery is a national monument of the 14th century, which is an Orthodox church. It is one of the most famous sights of Georgia. The monastery is located near the village of Patara-Zanavi, on the left bank of the Kvabliani River. If you ask the locals that the most beautiful monasteries are in Georgia, they will confirm that this is the purest truth.
Historical information
Quite a lot is known about this historical and religious monument. The temple was built in 1381. Unfortunately, only the church of St. George with an unrestored dome has reached us. This cultural monument dates back to the 14th century and this is where St. George used to pray.
The word "Chule" is translated in ancient Georgian as "deep closed square".
One of the famous people in this temple was Stefan Chulevel. A little later the phrase "Chuleveli" was considered the beginning of the word "martyrdom".
During the era of Ottoman raids, this monastery was defeated and conquered. And by 1595 it became abandoned. But soon, on the initiative of Archbishop Theodore (Chuadze), the monastery and monastic life were resumed in Chulevi.
What to see? Architecture
The temple of Chule is today part of the architectural ensemble of Safar and Zarzma. The monastery was included in this circle because of its proximity to these churches. The peculiarities of these three religious monuments are their similarity in design: the general plan and the interior plan are elongated, the dome resting on the walls of the temple, two crosses of similar shape.
The sanctuary has two entrances independent of each other: from the west and from the south. Looking at the walls, you can see several exquisite portraits of men. These are most likely members of the Jakeli family. The cultural monument is so elegant and interesting that we can accurately say that the frescoes in this monastery are presented as a separate kind of art - they explain and display some records from the Holy Scriptures.
