Unusual monasteries in Georgia. Monastery Bodbe.
The Bodbe complex was founded in the fifth century. Although the monastery is old, it has reached our days in good condition. Now a convent is functioning in Bodbe, there are many workshops around the monastery, and the nature around is very picturesque. You will definitely not regret if you visit this place.
The Convent of Saint Nino and the Episcopal center of the Diocese of Bodbe (Kiziki) are 2 km away. from Sighnaghi. The cathedral was erected on the grave of the enlightener of Georgia , Saint Nino in the IV century .
The Bodbe Episcopal complex was founded in the V century by Vakhtang Gorgasali. In the VII-IX centuries, the cathedral was rebuilt into a three-nave basilica. A great contribution to improving the appearance of the cathedral was made by the King of Georgia Demeter I (1125-1156). The monastery in Bodba was restored many times by the Georgian tsars. Since the end of the XV century, the bishop of Bodby led an advanced military detachment, which was called "sadrosho". In the XVII century, the David-Gareji monastery was also subordinate to Bishop Bodbe. The leader of the Bodbe monastery, Ione Makashvili, thoroughly restored the monastery in the 20s of the XIX century and made murals in it, installed an iconostasis. In 1837, the Bodby monastery was closed. And in 1889, by order of the Russian Emperor Alexander III, a convent was opened in Bodba (Mother abbess Tamara - Tamara Marjanishvili served here). There was also a school for noble maidens. In 1924, the Bolsheviks closed the monastery. In 1991, monastic activity was revived in Bodbe. One of the shrines of the monastery is the miraculous icon of the Iveron Mother of God.
The monastery has a fairly large farm. There are icon painting and craft workshops. The nuns conduct educational activities. Using the manuscripts, new theological books are being prepared for publication.
In the late 90s, a bathhouse and a small church named after her parents, Saints Zabulon and Susanna (architect Teimuraz Beridze), were built on the spring, which appeared as a result of the prayers of St. Nino. Many people visit these places every day.
