The first phase of construction of the fortress Bagineti came in the 3rd century BC. The ancient and most beautiful places of Georgia are located in this area.
If you are interested in history and like to visit archaeological excavations, visit the inner fortress of old Mtskheta. It was built several hundred years before our era and has been partially preserved to this day. In the blog "MadLoba" you will find more useful information about the location, history
In the city of Mtskheta, namely, in its old part, where stone houses are located, some of which were built in the Middle Ages, the Bagineti fortress was erected. Many travelers consider this building to be one of the most beautiful places in Georgia. Previously, it protected the city from invaders and enemy troops, later the city was replenished with new houses and residents, and the fortress became one of the borders of the old district.
Some sources say that Armaztsikhe Kartlos was engaged in the erection of the fortress and its original name was Kartli Fortress, and now the structure is called Bagineti, which translates from Persian as "deity".
The sights of Georgia often have an ancient history, the roots of which go back to the times before our era. Archaeological excavations were carried out on the site of the fortress, as a result of which archaeologists concluded that the fortress was built and supplemented over three epochs. The very first and oldest stage of construction occurred in the 4-3 centuries BC. The first king of Kartli, Parnavaz, was engaged in the erection of the fortress at that time, who also spread the Georgian language throughout the region. The second stage of construction occurred in the 3rd century BC, and the final, third, took place already in the 1-6 centuries AD. For a long time Armaztsikhe was subjected to numerous attacks by troops, after which the city was significantly damaged.
Excavations in Bagineti began only in the second half of the 19th century, and it all started with the fact that one day, during a conversation between the Georgian poet Ilya Chavchavadze and a Greek shipping agent, a brick fragment of the wall was shown, which Ilya was very interested in and asked the talented archaeologist Dmitry Bakradze to conduct archaeological work on the site of Bagineti. Due to unspecified reasons, Bakradze conveyed this request to Takaishvili. It was Ekvtime Takaishvili who carried out two-week excavations, as a result of which elements of everyday life and fragments of images with deities were found. Now you can enjoy them at the National Museum, there is something to see in Georgia.
What is included in the Bagineti complex?
