The Kvirike monastery complex near Ananuri is the ruin of a monastery away from the tourist flows of the Georgian Military Road. Kvirike, as St. Cyricus is called in Georgian, gave his name to many churches across the country, and the Ananuri ruins keep this dedication amid the hills of Mtianeti.
The paradox of the place lies in its neighbourhood: a couple of kilometres away stands the famed Ananuri fortress with its coaches and viewpoints, while here are complete silence and not a single signpost. In one visit both sides of Mtianeti are seen: the ceremonial fortress side and the hidden monastic one, the latter coming to you without any queues.
The ruins are seen in the open air at any time: there are no services here. The masonry needs care: no climbing on the walls, no shifting of stones, and litter is taken away.
