The museum carries the name of Goga Kupunia and the collection is built around his memory: documents, photographs, personal belongings and material passed on by the family and by fellow villagers. Town museums like this in Samegrelo are usually small but dense, because nothing here arrived by chance. Everything is shown and explained in person.
The museum is in Zugdidi, the administrative centre of Samegrelo, near the park and the skate area. The town is small and walkable: the Dadiani palace, the botanical garden and the market are minutes apart. Zugdidi serves as a base for trips to Svaneti and the Enguri reservoir.
The collection is intimate and twenty to thirty minutes is enough. Weekdays and the first half of the day are the easier times. Combine the trip with the Dadiani palace and the other town museums.
Tips
- Combine the visit with the Dadiani palace, the main museum of the town
- Plan Zugdidi as a stop on the way to Svaneti
- Come on weekdays, small museums are more often closed at weekends
How to get there
- About ten minutes on foot from the centre of Zugdidi
- Roughly two hours by car from Kutaisi via Samtredia and Senaki
