A family prayer place, the okhvame of the Jogejiani. The name is entirely Mingrelian and splits into two parts: okhvame is a place of prayer, and jogejianish is the genitive of a surname. The construction is ordinary in Samegrelo because the phenomenon is ordinary: a family keeps its own place of prayer across generations, separate from the parish church that everyone attends.

The prayer place stands within the town limits of Zugdidi, in residential streets away from the centre, yet calling it a town church would be wrong. It is a family shrine and follows the ways of a family rather than a parish. When it appeared, no one says.

Visit it with an understanding of what it is: the place is private and calls for more restraint than usual. Move nothing, leave candles and offerings alone, keep voices low. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf.
