  • Description

This monastery dedicated to Saint George was constructed in the architectural style of the 7th-8th centuries and has a rich history. The monastery, where 70 monks once resided simultaneously, plays a significant role in the country's history. In the 19th century, it was restored thanks to the efforts of Solomon II (King of Imereti) and Saint Ilarion Kanchaveli (born 1776 – died 1864).

During the atheistic period of Soviet communism, the church and its historical significance suffered.

In the late 20th century, in 1992, the monastery was revived, and a monastic complex named after thirteen saints was established, including the Tabakini Church (built in 2000), cells, and other buildings. Numerous books and manuscripts are also preserved here. The monastery was home to Saint Jacob (Chkhonelidze), who, through his ministry, ensured the well-being of the monks by providing them with water and electricity. Over time, the number of monks increased, and some were transferred to other monasteries. Today, the monastery is inhabited by seven priests: Saint Jacob (Chkhonelidze), Saint Paul (Machitadze), and five monks: Mamuka Kiknavelidze, George Beradze, Alexander Buskivadze, and Iliya Forchkhidze.
