The mosque survives on the site of the deserted village of Charali, in the mountains above the Akhaltsikhe basin. No inhabited houses remain around it, and the building stands among overgrown plots and old terraces.
Meskheti was long part of the Ottoman Empire and Muslim communities here were numerous, while some mountain villages emptied out during the last century. The road to Charali climbs from the valley, with the final kilometres unpaved. Forest, slopes and abandoned hayfields lie around.
Agree any photography inside with the community, as shooting without permission is not accepted. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Leave spare time for the climb.
- In summer bring a hat, as there is almost no shade.
- Bring socks, as shoes are left at the entrance.
Getting there
- Leave the car at the nearest street and continue on foot.
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
