The Gelovani Palace is the estate of a noble family that held lands in Lechkhumi. What is worth looking at here is the architecture itself: the plan, the masonry, the window openings and the way the building sits on the slope. Few noble estates of this scale survive in the mountain part of western Georgia, and that is where the value lies.
The estate stands in Spatagori, a village in the Tsageri municipality, on the slopes above the Rioni valley. Around it are forest, orchards and yards scattered across the mountainside. A Gelovani house museum works in the same village; the two are different places tied to one family.
The visit takes about half an hour. Come in the warm season and in daylight, roads in Lechkhumi are harder in winter. Combine the trip with Tsageri and the other sites of the district.
Tips
- See both sites in the village, the palace and the house museum

- Wear comfortable shoes, the way to the estate runs up a slope
How to get there
- From Tsageri along the local road, about twenty minutes by car
