The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, the feast known in Georgia as Mariamoba and kept at the end of August. This is a town parish rather than a village church, and there are few such in Lechkhumi: the district here is almost entirely rural.
Tsageri is the administrative centre of Lechkhumi, a small town in the Tskhenistskali valley. From here roads fan out into all the gorges of the district: the nameless church of Dekhviri stands about three kilometres away, the church of the Virgin at Kveda Lukhvano four, the Lasuriashi monastery four and a half.
The parish is urban and better attended than village ones, so getting inside is easier. The usual rules: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, silence. Tsageri is a convenient base for travelling in Lechkhumi, close to nearly all the neighbouring valleys.
