The Tariel Kharkhelauri House Museum keeps the setting of a mountain house and the things gathered within the family: dishes, tools, textiles, photographs. In Tianeti the way of life is closer to that of Pshavi and Mtiuleti than to the lowlands, and a house like this shows the difference clearly. It is shown in person, so the account is lively.
The house stands in Simoniantkhevi, a village in the Tianeti municipality, among wooded hills above the Iori valley. Around it are yards scattered across the slopes, pastures and local roads. Tianeti is less than half an hour away.
The house is small and half an hour is enough. Come in the warm season and in the first half of the day, and arrange the visit in advance. Combine the trip with a wider Tianeti route.
Tips
- Come in the warm season, mountain roads are harder in winter
- Arrange the visit through the village in advance
- Combine the trip with Tianeti and Sioni lake
How to get there
- From Tianeti along the local road, about twenty minutes by car
- Roughly an hour and a half from Tbilisi via Saguramo and Tianeti
