Архивы выполняют важную роль в политической, экономической, научной и культурной жизни Грузии, сохраняя документальное наследие предков. Современные архивы страны были сформированы 23 апреля 1920 года на основании закона о создании Центрального научного архива Республики, принятого Демократической Республикой Грузии. Впоследствии, 1 июля 1921 года, революционный комитет Грузии издал декрет о реорганизации архивного дела. С 2004 года архивы находятся под руководством Министерства юстиции Грузии как Государственный департамент архивов.
