The Why Not Gallery works with contemporary Georgian art and focuses on young artists. It was founded in 2018 by the artist Gvantsa Jishkariani and the curator Ellen Kapanadze, starting out as a vitrine in an underground passage, and since 2020 the project has had a permanent space. There is no standing display, the shows change, so it is worth checking the programme on the website before visiting.
The gallery occupies a space on Egnate Ninoshvili street in the Chugureti district, not far from the Mtkvari embankment. The block is residential, with typical Tbilisi courtyards, and the sign is modest, so the entrance is easy to walk past. Several cafes and other independent art spaces are nearby, enough for one evening on foot.
The hours depend on the current exhibition and are announced on the gallery website. Twenty to thirty minutes is usually enough unless you arrive for an opening. Entry to the shows is normally free.
Tips
- Check the programme online, the space may be closed between exhibitions
- Come towards the evening, artist talks and openings happen at that time
- Combine the visit with a walk through Chugureti, the district is worth it on its own
How to get there
- About ten minutes on foot from Marjanishvili metro station along Ninoshvili street
- Street parking is limited, it is easier to leave the car near the embankment
