  • Description

The Favnisi Church of St. George in the village of Garikula, Kaspi municipality, Shida Kartli, is a living witness to history, decorated with stone and paintings. Built in the 9th-10th centuries, this hall church made of sandstone and tuff impresses with its architectural grace. Its interior, ending with a semicircular apse in the east, surprises with its craftsmanship and antiquity.

Imagine: a triumphal temple, decorated with pilasters supporting semi-cylindrical arches, and crowned with a concrete vault in the west. Despite modernization, the altar still keeps its ancient secrets, and the walls are decorated with frescoes and ornaments.

Inside the church there is history on the walls: paintings painted at different times recreate the picturesque world of the second half of the 12th and 13th centuries. Small fragments of the original painting remain on the north and south walls, while a second layer brings to life the altar area with expressive frescoes.

Favnisi Church is not only a historical heritage, but also the cultural wealth of Georgia. Visitors can experience the spirit of the times by walking between walls decorated with historical scenes and symbols, and enjoy a unique atmosphere that connects the past and present of this amazing place.
