The Abukhalo monastery stands in the mountains near Tkemlovana village in the south of Shida Kartli. The community is small and lives by its own routine.
The area lies well to the south of Khashuri, on the northern slopes of the Trialeti range, where the road climbs through wooded gorges. The village name echoes tkemali, the Georgian cherry plum.
Modest clothing is appropriate in the monastery, and women may want a headscarf. Photography and attending services are best agreed with the residents.
