The monastery of St George stands by Phona village in the Rikoti area, in the west of Khashuri Municipality. It is an active community and receives pilgrims.
The site lies on the climb towards the Rikoti pass, where the road between eastern and western Georgia runs. Wooded slopes surround it, and a short ascent leads up from the highway.
Ordinary monastic rules apply here: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet, and photography by permission.
