  • Description

In the green embrace of the Potoleti forest, in the municipality of Borjomi, is the Potoleti Church and Monastery, one of the oldest historical treasures of the region. Hidden in the plain, just 5 kilometers south of Akhaldaba, this monastery is not only a testament to its rich history, but also a unique hideaway surrounded by majestic forest. The road winding from Akhaldaba runs through a dense forest, surrounding you with enchanting greenery. Access to the monastery is also possible on foot, providing a unique opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of nature and find peace of mind. With a magnificent view of the surrounding area, as if conquered by time and restored with love, our travelers enjoy the moment, immersed in the silence and beauty of this place.

Legend says that the monastery was built by Christopher, a follower of St. Grigol Khandzteli, in the 40s of the 9th century as the Kvirike Tsminda Monastery. Despite its antiquity, since the 14th century the monastery has remained abandoned, devoid of life and forgotten by time. Centuries of wear and tear and invasion by enemies have left their mark on the holy site. However, in 2007, thanks to the efforts of researchers and archaeologists, the monastery regained its former grandeur. The restored temple, called Potoleti, was a symbol of the revival of this historical place.

Archaeological excavations around the monastery have led to amazing discoveries. Among them are numerous bones of monks scattered around the temple courtyard, testifying to the ordeal experienced by this holy place. In addition, agricultural, building and kitchen ceramics were discovered, as well as a decorative iconostasis from the 10th century and a cornice decorated with elegant carvings. During the excavations, a mysterious crypt with ancient inscriptions was also discovered, which still excites the minds of researchers.

Potoleti Church and Monastery is not just a historical place. This is a place where majestic nature is combined with spiritual depth and centuries of strong history. For those who seek inspiration from the beauty of nature and the richness of cultural heritage, this place will be an unforgettable trip. Climb to its gates and discover the amazing secrets of antiquity, immerse yourself in the silence of centuries and feel the peace that only such a holy place can bestow.
