Only ruins remain of the church, known under two names: Kharaba and Tsiteli Sakdari, the Red Church. The second name has stuck to the building because of the colour of its stone.
The ruins stand by the highland Lake Tabatskuri, one of the largest and coldest in Georgia. Open slopes at about two thousand metres surround them, and in winter the road here can be closed.
Do not go inside, the masonry crumbles. The wind by the lake is strong even in summer, so take a warm jacket.
