The church belongs to the Armenian Apostolic tradition and is dedicated to St. Jacob. In the Armenian church calendar several saints bear the name of Jacob, and without further detail it is impossible to tell which is meant, so we give the dedication as it stands.
Patara Khanchali lies south of Ninotsminda, on the plateau by the lake of the same name. There are few neighbours nearby: the Halacha shrine in Ninotsminda itself about four kilometres away, the ruins of the Armenian church of Didi Khanchali almost five. There are two Khanchalis here, a greater and a lesser, and the names say so.
The plateau is open and the wind constant, and in winter the road drifts over. The church is opened mostly for services and is accessible from outside at any time. Dress modestly, keep the yard quiet, leave offerings untouched.
