Shoreti Monastery is a secluded monastic complex in the mountains north-east of Aspindza, above the village of Ota. Of all the monasteries of Aspindza Municipality this one is hidden deepest, and it is loved precisely for the seclusion: people come here not in passing but on purpose, and the road itself filters out the casual guests.
The mountain road is unpaved and takes time, but at the top waits what such a trip is undertaken for: old walls, coniferous slopes and a silence in which one hears one’s own steps. Shoreti is one of those places where pilgrimage and mountain travel fold into a single experience.
The order of the house asks respect: modest dress, a headscarf for women, quiet on the grounds. The dirt road asks for dry weather and spare time: haste is doubly out of place here.
