The church of St. George at Garti is a solitary church in the highlands above Ota village, next to Shoreti Monastery. No one comes here by chance: Garti goes to those who have already made it into these mountains for the silence and are now ready to go a little further along the dirt road, leaving the car below.
The reward matches the effort: a St. George church up high, coniferous slopes and the sense of the edge of the inhabited world. Paired with Shoreti it makes a full mountain day: the monastery, the solitary church and the way back with views over the whole Aspindza side. Setting out early is wise: in the mountains it grows dark sooner than in the valley.
The place is open and can be approached at any time: there are no regular services here. The mountain road demands dry weather, and the altitude demands warm clothes even in summer.
