Kumurdo Temple, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia

The Kumurdo Temple, located in the picturesque Samtskhe-Javakheti region in the village of Kumurdo in the Akhalkalaki municipality, is a majestic testimony of Georgian architecture of the 10th century. Its history began in 964, when the Georgian architect Sakotsari, under the leadership of Bishop John, erected the first stone walls of this temple in the era of King Leon III. Later, during the time of Bagrat IV, a standing structure was added to the temple on the south side, and in the 16th century it underwent reconstruction.

Kumurdo Temple is an important cultural heritage site of Georgia. Despite the fact that the temple has survived to this day in a damaged state, part of its dome and vaults have collapsed, and the western side was destroyed and restored somewhat tastelessly, it still impresses with its grandeur and sophistication.

Architecturally, the temple is a hall-type building with a unique layout. Five semicircular apses and one rectangular arm create an interior space filled with light and mysticism. The decor of the temple is amazing: triangular niches, floral and geometric patterns, images of evangelists and members of the Georgian royal family - all this gives the building a unique character and beauty.
